With the goal of stimulating the production of knowledge regarding the slums in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the project Dicionário Carioca de Favelas e Biblioteca Virtual (“Carioca” Dictionary of Slums and Virtual Library) arises as a collaborative virtual platform that will be made available in an open fashion and free to reuse. The initiative is being developed at a time in which the subject of reality in the slums has been the focus of increasing attention by organizations and academic institutions.

The production of the dictionary is initially organized around work groups defined according to themes such as “Memory and Associations”, “Sociability”, and “Culture, State and Market”. The Library has been built based on the contribution of collaborators who own collections and online documents on the subject. Ideally, these initiatives will help recuperate the collective memory and identities of the slums.
